Black Gold Festival

Greetings from Hazard and the Black Gold Festival!

This morning a former parishioner came up to see the renovated church. He was back in town to enjoy the Black Gold. He said going to this festival is like a family reunion; you get to see everyone you know. Even Fr. Mike Chowning, OFM, who is on sabbatical, came in for a visit. The festival is fun and helps to build community. Of course, the fringe benefit is that you get to eat funnel cakes ... and with all the visitors in town, we'll have a few extra people at Mass on Sunday.

The parish covers three counties - Knott, Leslie, and Perry (1006 sq. mi.) in the heartland of the Appalachian coal mining region. We are a diverse community comprising native Appalachian people, people from outside the region, and many from other countries and cultures, such as Germany, Hungry, South America, Phillipines, and India.
